Topic 8: Software engineering for Computational Medicine

Chair: Maciej Malawski, Sano Centre and Institute of Computer Science AGH, Kraków, Poland

Co-Chair: Alfredo Tirado-Ramos, Dartmouth University, USA

Computational medicine is a rapidly growing research area, combining developments in computer science, computational science and data science applied to a wide range of biomedical applications, with special focus on healthcare. Methods of computational medicine include modeling and simulation of all the processes in human organism, data science and machine learning for automating the process of  analysis of data from imaging, clinical records, measurements and all other sources about patients. All these lead to development of software tools supporting prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, ultimately resulting in clinical decision support systems. Specific nature of computational medicine poses unique challenges to software engineering, which will be the subject of this conference topic. We seek contributions addressing:

  • software engineering methodologies and processes in computational medicine
  • management of software development projects in computational medicine
  • support tools for software development in computational medicine
  • quality, reuse and testing software in computational medicine
  • verification and validation of software in computational medicine
  • general purpose tools, libraries and open source toolkits for computational medicine
  • regulatory and certification aspects of software for computational medicine.
